Great Adventure to Electric Island

Exhibition Dates : Jul 10, 2019 (Wed.) – Nov 11, 2019 (Mon.)

Open : 11:00 – 21:00

Admission : Free

People around the world use electricity every day, but where is it generated and how is it delivered?
The answers to these riddles are hidden here on “Electric Island.”
If you can complete the missions scattered across the island, and deliver electricity to the homes, buildings and factories that need it, these questions should be answered.
The keywords are “Generate,” “ Transmit,” and “Distribute.”
Now, it’s time to begin the “Great Adventure to Electric Island,” made possible by Mitsubishi Electric,
which is involved in all three of the keyword areas mentioned above!

Challenge yourself in this great adventure about “generating,”“transmitting,” and “distributing” electricity!

Can you clear all three stages and make the “Electric Tower” light up?!
Today is the lighting ceremony of Electric Island’s symbol, “Electric Tower.” Your mission is to deliver an electricity ball to the tower. Make an electricity ball using one of the various power generation methods and deliver it in time for the lighting ceremony. On Electric Island, you must clear the three stages of “generate,” “transmit,” and “distribute” or the electricity ball won’t reach Electric Tower. Deliver the electricity ball to the lighting ceremony on time for a memorable grand finale! Your adventure starts now!

If you clear all of the stages, you will receive a “Souvenir Card” of your adventure!

How is electricity generated and delivered? Follow the route!

Electricity is generated via various methods using thermal power, hydropower, or solar power.

So as not to waste it,the size of electricity is changedas it is transmitted.

Before being distributed, electricity is transformed to the necessary size that matches the need in the place where it will be used.

[Generate]
Generate electricity using fire, water, or light of the Sun!

Electricity is generated by using power from many different sources, including fire, water, and the Sun.
Let’s learn the three mechanisms for generating electricity!

Electricity is generated in various ways.

Thermal power generation

Coal, gas, or another fuel is burnt in a boiler to heat water and produce steam. This steam turns a turbine, which then turns a generator connected to the turbine, and electricity is generated.

Hydropower generation

The force created when water falls from a high place to a lower place is used to turn a water-wheel, which then turns a generator connected to the water-wheel, generating electricity.

Photovoltaic power generation

When light of the Sun hits a solar cell, “the negative” (electron) and “the positive” (hole) are made in the semiconductor, and electricity is generated.

[Transmit]
Transmit electricity efficiently while changing its size!

The power transmission line connects Electric Island’s substation to the city. Let's dive into the transmission line and transmit electricity (an electricity ball) efficiently to the city nearby! There are three stages in total. Let’s go through the substations along the way and make the ball smaller.

The size of electricity is gradually changed as it travels through substations.

Some electrical energy becomes heat and loses as electricity is being transmitted. Accordingly, electricity is first transmitted as a “high-voltage” so that the electrical energy does not lose easily. It then passes through a number of substations and changed into “low-voltage” on its way to cities where it will be used. By changing the size of electricity, it can be transmitted efficiently with less waste.

[Distribute]
Let’s generate and deliver electricity used in buildings, factories and homes!

Let’s generate and deliver electricity used in buildings, factories and homes!

Electricity is made the right size before being distributed.

Electricity is used in various places in cities, such as homes, buildings, and factories, and these places all require different sizes of electricity. For example, homes and small factories require 100-200V, while buildings and factories require as much as 6,600V and therefore must be sent a larger size of electricity.
